Create and secure your account
Install Snapchat on your own phone and sign up with your real birth date. Family Center only works for parents and caregivers 18 or older. Then turn on two-factor authentication: Profile > Settings (gear) > My Account > Two-Factor Authentication > Continue, and choose SMS or Authentication App. Snapchat requires a mobile number and an email address on accounts that use it.
Add your teen and send the invite
Tap the search bar at the top of the Camera screen, find your teen’s username, and accept each other as friends. Open Profile > My Friends > Family Center, or Profile > Settings > App & Privacy > Family Center. Follow the setup, choose your teen, and tap Send Invitation. It arrives as a Chat message that can delete once viewed, so tell your teen in person.
Have your teen accept
On your teen’s phone, open the Chat from you and tap Accept. Family Center is for teens ages 13–17 and ends when they turn 18. Your teen can open Family Center the same way you did and see a mirrored view of what you see. Your teen can also leave Family Center, so treat it as a shared agreement, not a secret.
Turn on content and My AI controls
In Family Center, scroll to Settings at the bottom and tap to expand it. Turn on Hide Sensitive Content to limit sensitive or suggestive posts in Stories and Spotlight; Snapchat says no filter is perfect. Turn on Disable My AI so My AI will not reply to your teen or store and process their messages. Family Center Settings > Manage Purchases opens Apple or Google purchase controls.
Check who can contact your teen
On your teen’s phone, open Profile > Settings > App & Privacy > Contact Me. Teen contact is limited to friends and phone contacts and cannot be widened; choose Friends for the tightest option. People already in a group chat with your teen can still message them there. Then open App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data to review Story and Find Friends settings.
Agree on location sharing
Snap Map location sharing is off by default, and teens can share only with accepted friends. If your family wants it, send a location request from Family Center; your teen must accept, and you can share yours back. Place Alerts can notify you of arrivals and departures. On your teen’s phone, the Map settings (gear) show who can see them. Ghost Mode hides them from everyone on the Map.
Review friends, chats, and time, and report
Check Recent Conversations (who your teen chatted with in the last 7 days, not the messages), New Friends with labels such as In Contact Book or Can View Location, and Time Spent. To report an account, tap the flag icon beside it. Reports are confidential: your teen and the account are not told. Your teen can block from Chat: press and hold a name > Manage Friendship > Block.

WHAT THE CONTROLS DO NOT SOLVE
- Family Center shows who your teen talks to, never what they say. It does not show Snaps or Chat content, and your teen can choose to leave it.
- Snaps and Chats delete by default, but anyone who receives them can screenshot, save, or photograph them with another device. Talk about this before it matters, and read our sextortion guide together.
- Time Spent is a report, not a limit, and the content filter can miss posts. Use your phone’s own parental controls if you want time limits.
