Secure your own account
Start with your own account, since it will approve changes to your teen’s settings. Open Profile > Menu > Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication, select your account, and pick a method. Instagram recommends an authentication app. Some accounts show Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center.
Send the supervision invite
From your own account, open Profile > Menu > Supervision for Teen Accounts, then tap Create invite. Some versions list it as Supervision under For families. Review the screen, tap Continue, then choose Find your teen on Instagram or Send your teen a link. Instagram may ask you to follow your teen first. Invites expire after 7 days.
Accept on your teen’s phone
Sit with your teen. They open the link, tap Next, then Allow. If your teen sent the invite instead, you open the link, tap Next, then Accept invite, and your teen confirms you in Profile > Menu > Supervision > Allow. Supervision needs both of you to agree, and only one parent can supervise a teen’s account.
Review the Teen Account settings
Open Profile > Menu > Supervision for Teen Accounts and tap your teen. Check that the account is private. New Teen Accounts start private, but an older public account belonging to a 16 or 17-year-old can stay public. Messages are limited to people your teen follows or has connected with. Teens under 16 need your approval to loosen any of this. With supervision, so do 16 and 17-year-olds.
Choose the content setting
In Profile > Menu > Supervision for Teen Accounts, tap What content they see. Ages 13+ is the default and shows content generally aligned with ratings for ages 13+. Limited content is stricter: your teen cannot view, leave, or receive comments. You can make the setting stricter at any time. More content only happens if your teen sends a request and you approve it.
Set time limits and sleep mode
Open Profile > Menu > Supervision for Teen Accounts > your teen > Time management. Set the Daily limit and Sleep mode, then pick Remind teen to close Instagram or Block teen from Instagram. Instagram’s help pages list a 1-hour reminder and 10 PM to 7 AM sleep mode. Meta’s August 2026 agreement with state attorneys general, including Massachusetts, will add a two-hour default limit and a midnight to 6 AM block, so check what your teen’s account shows.
Check location and practice reporting
On your teen’s phone, open Messages > Map > Settings. Location sharing starts off, and a red dot means it is still off. Supervision lets you see who can view it, or turn the map off, where available. Then practice on a profile: Options > Block, Restrict, or Report. Blocked people are not notified, and reports are anonymous. Your teen can choose to tell you about a report.
FIVE-MINUTE CHECK
Verify, don't assume.
- Your teen appears under Supervision for Teen Accounts
- The account is private and the content setting is Ages 13+ or Limited content
- Daily limit and sleep mode match your family plan
- The map shows a red dot, or sharing only with people you agreed on
- Two-factor authentication is on for your own account
WHAT THE CONTROLS DO NOT SOLVE
- You see who your teen chats with, not what they say. Supervision does not show messages or search history, and you cannot post for them or reset their password.
- Filters hide content Instagram finds, not everything. Teens can still see content from, and chat with, adults whose content has not been flagged as inappropriate for teens.
- Supervision is not permanent. Either of you can remove it, the other is notified, and it ends at 18. Afterward, teens 13 to 15 return to Teen Account defaults, while 16 and 17-year-olds keep their current settings.
