Secure your account, then create your child’s
Turn on two-factor authentication first: go to accountscenter.meta.com > Password and security > Two-factor authentication, then select your Meta account. Next, open Meta Horizon app > Menu > Family Center > Get started, choose Create an account for a child, tap Continue, and follow the prompts. This account type is for ages 10 to 12. Children under 10 can’t have a Meta account.
Set up the headset and lock your profile
On the headset, log in with your own email and password, then choose to continue with your child’s account. Then protect your adult profile so your child can’t switch to it: press the Meta button, then Quick controls > Settings > Passcode > Create. Enter 4 to 16 digits and require it for Unlock headset. Repeat for every other profile on the headset.
Fit the headset and set the boundary
Adjust the straps, headset position, and lenses until text on the screen is clear. If it won’t fit or stay clear, wait. Clear furniture, pets, and people from the play area. Then press the Meta button, then Quick controls > Settings > Environment setup > Boundary > Adjust boundary. Roomscale needs at least 6.5 by 6.5 feet. Set it again in each new room.
Approve apps, worlds, and spending
Your child taps Send request on an app’s page. In the Meta Horizon app, open the notification, tap Review app, then Allow or Block. For a paid app, tap Purchase for your child. Approve Worlds, then open Family Center > your child > Safety settings > Manage World access and pick a rating level or approve worlds one by one. Preteens can’t buy Meta Credits themselves.
Approve contacts and practice blocking
Your child’s profile stays private, and in worlds a personal boundary keeps others at a distance. Voice chat, calls, and invites work only with approved contacts: Family Center > your child > Followers and following > View profile > Review permissions > Add. Show your child how to block or report: in a world, press Menu on the left controller, pick the person, then Options.
Set time limits and watch live
Open Meta Horizon app > Menu > Family Center, select your child, and tap Manage time limits to set a daily limit and scheduled breaks. At the limit, the headset restarts and can’t be used for the rest of the day. To see what your child sees, tap Watch live on the same Wi-Fi, or cast to a Chromecast TV from the headset: Quick controls > Cast.
If your teen is 13 to 17, invite them
Teens run their own accounts, so supervision is by invitation and both of you must agree. Open Meta Horizon app > Menu > Family Center > Get started > Invite a teen > Continue > Create link, and share it. Once your teen accepts, open their profile in Family Center, then Supervision settings, to lock voice channel and personal boundary, block apps, and set time limits.

- Two-factor authentication is on for your own Meta account
- Your headset profile asks for a passcode after sleep
- A test app request reaches your phone with Allow and Block
- A daily limit and breaks show under Manage time limits
- Watch live connects, and your child sees the notification
WHAT THE CONTROLS DO NOT SOLVE
- Chat limits cover people, not places. Players who aren’t approved contacts can still be in the same app or world, and Meta says they may be able to interact with your child, depending on the app.
- Teen supervision is optional. Either of you can turn it off, and you’ll be notified. You can’t read private messages, and mature apps downloaded before supervision aren’t blocked by default.
- The boundary warns; it doesn’t stop. Meta says children may still lose track of the room, so stay nearby and plan breaks: Meta advises one every 30 minutes when starting out.
