Start the setup
If the watch isn’t new, erase it first. Put it on, or have your child put it on, and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Hold it near your iPhone and tap Continue when “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch” appears. If it doesn’t, open the Apple Watch app and tap All Watches > Add Watch. Then tap Set Up for a Family Member.
Pair, add a passcode, and choose your child
Hold your iPhone over the animation on the watch to pair them, then tap Set Up Apple Watch. Agree to the terms, set a watch passcode, and choose your child from Family Sharing. Then enter your child’s Apple Account password. Never share one Apple Account between family members.
Turn on Ask to Buy and add cellular
Turn on Ask to Buy, so downloads and purchases need your OK. If your carrier supports Apple Watch For Your Kids, add the watch to your plan now. If not, tap Not Now and set up a plan later with a supported carrier. Some work phone plans don’t support it.
Share approved contacts
Choose trusted people from your own Contacts to share with the watch. Only the people you approve can call or message your child. You can change the list later in Screen Time on your iPhone, and if your child wants to reach someone new, Apple’s Ask to communicate sends the request to you. Then set a Screen Time passcode for the watch.
Schedule Schooltime
In the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, tap your child’s watch under Family Watches, then tap Schooltime. Turn it on and tap Edit Schedule. During Schooltime, apps and notifications are blocked and a yellow circle shows on the watch face. Your child can exit to check messages or call emergency services, and you get a notification when they do.
Check Communication Safety
On your iPhone, open Settings > Family > your child’s name > Screen Time and make sure Communication Safety is on. Apple turns it on by default for children under 18 with current software. On the watch it covers Messages, Contact Posters, and FaceTime video messages, and watchOS 27 adds gore and violence detection.
Test the real routine
Place a call, send a message, and check that the watch shows up in Find My. See what the watch does during Schooltime before the first school day. Show your child how Emergency SOS reaches emergency services, but don’t place a test call to 911.

- The watch appears under Family Watches in the Apple Watch app
- Your child has their own Apple Account and a watch passcode
- Only the contacts you chose appear, and Ask to Buy is on
- Schooltime follows the school schedule
- Calls, messages, and location sharing work away from your iPhone
WHAT THE CONTROLS DO NOT SOLVE
- Apple’s pages list different minimum models: Series 4 or later for setup, Series 6 or later for Schooltime, and Series 9 or later or SE 3 for watchOS 27. Check the model before you buy a used watch.
- Your iPhone manages the watch, and it must be within Bluetooth range, about 33 feet, to change settings or update it. Only the parent who set it up gets full controls; other parents in Family Sharing can see its location in Find My.
- A cellular plan isn’t needed for setup, but calls and texts away from your iPhone need one. Some features, like Sleep and Apple Pay with a card, aren’t available, and Apple Watch For Your Kids isn’t offered in every country or by every carrier.
